Living Room by Kathleen Walsh Interiors for the Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse 2017.

THE BROOKLYN HEIGHTS DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE

The inaugural Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse, open through November 5th, fits Brooklyn to an absolute T.  The innovatively adorned spaces nail a wide spectrum of Kings County aesthetics, from Boho chic to industrial luxe, and from Bloomsbury Group to Ico Parisi-esque Mid-Century modern.  The details in the various showhouse interiors are consistently compelling.  Palm leaf wallpaper covers a ceiling, tassel-fringe lampshades dangle about, super-size snails and fireflies scale bathroom walls, rugs are layered upon rugs, and chintz upon chintz.  Definitely start planning your visit and purchase showhouse tickets here.

The grounds and gardens of Hubert Givenchy's Château du Jonchet, the fashion designer's moated country home in France.

CHATEAU DU JONCET

While writing about my recent visit to the showhouse, I learned that Josh Hildreth’s grand salon at the DC Design House 2017 was inspired by Hubert de Givenchy’s French country home, Chateau du Joncet.  Curious, I set out to learn more about Mr. Hildreth’s starting point.  I’m so happy I did, as the French designer’s country manor is as dazzling as the couture he’s designed since founding La Maison de Givenchy in 1952.  Join me for a tour of the moated 16th Century Renaissance castle, and residence of Hubert de Givenchy, Chateau du Joncet.

Classic black turtleneck to wear to work this Fall. See all my Fall Style picks here: https://www.sarahsarna.com/key-pieces-wear-work-fall/

KEY PIECES TO WEAR TO WORK THIS FALL

Although temperatures in Northern Virginia and D.C. are still in the 80s, mood-wise, it’s time to start or think about starting to transition our outfits from Summer to Early Fall.  This includes wear to work outfits, which are a little less exciting to changeover than weekend wear.  To lend us all a hand, and give our Fall work clothes a jump, I’ve rounded up 8 key pieces to wear to work as the weather shifts from Summer to Indian Summer / Early Fall.  Think ankle boots and pumps instead of sandals, light cotton sweaters* and tissue turtlenecks instead of short sleeve-tops,  and leather skirts and pants instead of linen or cotton options.  Keep reading for more ideas.

Tory Burch NYFW 2017 Hairstyle: ponytails with Black velvet Hair Bows.

Photo: Source.*

HAIR BOWS

I have three hairstyles: wearing my hair down, wearing it in a bun, or wearing it in a ponytail.  So I’m doing a full-on happy dance to see that a low ponytail with a hair bow is trending this Fall.  How to?  Pull your hair in a low ponytail and use one of the hair bows I’ve rounded up here as a hair tie or barrette.  Done and done.

CHAD JAMES

For Interior Designer Chad James of Chad James Group (CJG), decorating with confidence is essential to his success. After featuring the Nashville-based designer’s gorgeous interiors several times here on the blog (who can forget this Chicago penthouse or this Southeastern Showhouse library?), I was stoked to see Chad named just a few days ago to the Traditional Home New Trad Class of ’17, and thrilled to virtually sit down with him for this interview. I heart that he describes confidence as a transformative skill that he intentionally learned to embrace: “… learning to trust my instinct; not doubting [was pivotal]. My mentor taught me early on to make a decision. If it’s wrong, then make it right. Know your ability and stick with it. I’m very decisive.”

The cover of a newly released art book from Vendome Press: David Hicks scrapbooks.

Image: @ashleyhicks1970.

I spent Saturday afternoon reading David Hicks scrapbooks*, a new September-release art book gifted to me by Vendome Press. Edited and photographed by David Hick’s son, interior designer Ashley Hicks (brother of India Hicks), the 336-page book is a son’s edit of decades of his father’s life and design work, amassed in 24 volumes of scrapbooks. The magic of this publication’s presentation is in the natural sunlight that Ashley Hicks used to photograph his dad’s scrapbooks on his kitchen floor. Ashley’s hyper-real photography creates an unbelievable sense of intimacy between reader and text, that truthfully leaves me dizzy with awe at the full legacy of a true design icon. Reading it, I feel as though I am reading David Hicks’ actual scrapbooks, rather than a compilation; this is a very special book.

Beige belted camel coat for Fall. More camel coat outfit ideas: https://www.sarahsarna.com/camel-coat/

Above coat*.

A CAMEL COAT

The very first Fall Fashion essential on my list of 15 Classic Fall Fashion Staples to Invest In is the camel coat. Up until now you’ve probably held 2 common misconceptions about the camel coat: (1) that it’s predominantly a coat to wear to work, for special occasions, or as outerwear with a dress, and (2) that camel coats are pricey. As you’ll see in this post, a camel coat looks just as amazing thrown over workout clothes or jeans and a t-shirt, as paired with a dress. Secondly, camel coats can be picked up for under $150, or even close to $100, like this one*.
