STYLE PROFILE IS AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW SERIES WITH TOP DESIGNERS AND TASTEMAKERS.
Trained at The Cooper Union’s School of Architecture, Tom Scheerer, 58, began his interior design career with Jeffrey Bilhuber in 1986. He has never worked for another designer. His mentors have been books: those of Billy Baldwin, Albert Hadley, and David Hicks. Scheerer modestly describes his work as “cheerful” and “no nonsense.” I describe it as a chic mix of the classic, the old-fashioned, and the modern.
After reading his book and sharing it here on LTLYDA I knew he would make for a fantastic style profile. Miles Redd describes Scheerer’s work as “…[S]pirited and reserved. It’s exuberant and quiet. It’s never ever vulgar, thanks to his Yankee understatement, but you always notice it.” The designer has his trademarks: limed finishes, Saarinen tables, and Thonet bentwood chairs. Tom Scheerer’s style, however, encompasses his entire lifestyle philosophy. “Elegance,” he says, “is really about economy.”
I’m so happy to have him here today.
