LIKE THE FASHION HOUSES OF ITS NATIVE PARIS
Like the fashion houses of its native Paris, luxury furniture retailer Roche Bobois unveils two new home furnishings collections each year. The biannual collections are a fabulous reason to stop into one of the company’s two Manhattan showrooms at least every Spring/Summer or Fall/Winter to see their latest pieces, a must especially for interior designers to stay abreast of the most current designs coming out of Europe.
Gilles Bonan, the company’s chief executive, believes that Roche Bobois customers are drawn to the furniture’s comfort, quality, and what he calls “French flair.” The French flair, which I love, is visible throughout the brand’s body of work, from the most celebrated pieces, like the boho-chic Mah Jong modular sofa, to the high-tech remote-controlled showpieces, like the Astrolab Dining table, to their newest releases from the 2014 Spring-Summer Collection.

MAH JONG SOFA
One of the most iconic and most well-known Roche Bobois pieces, the MAH JONG sofa has remained unchanged since Hans Hopfer designed it, over 40 years ago. Over the decades, the low-slung design of the hand-stitched padded floor and back cushions has not been altered, but instead redressed in upholstery fabrics from international fashion designers like Kenzo, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Missoni (as shown). The ultra low, and highly interchangeable, modular sofa is comprised of three pieces that can be put together in an endless array of arrangements. With so many layout possibilities, the MAH JONG makes me play around with every one.
