Hi, Jennifer from Hometown Heroine, here. It’s finally starting to feel like fall to me. Something I have noticed in the past couple years living in San Francisco is that residents play much more with texture than color. What do I mean by that? Well, your more likely to see a woman in head to toe black consisting of different fabrics than a lady in bright colors. It’s just how we seem to dress. So when autumn rolls around, the fun truly seems to begin. At work a few days ago I was noticing all the different fabrics we were mixing on clients; flannel and suede, chiffon and leather and everything in between. It got me thinking, why don’t I play with texture in my beauty routine? So I thought about where I could add something a little different and it clicked, my nails! I remembered that in my nail polish collection I have OPI Matte Top Coat, which I hadn’t used in a while. I decided to redo my nails and quickly noticed that by simply applying one coat over normal nail polish, it gave my generally glossy nails a matte suede appearance! Clearly the matte nails look is brilliant for fall.
The first time I decided to play with the matte coat was with a simple nude nail. Essie makes quite a few beige shades that look great on most completions. Shades like this are classic, elegant and the matte topcoat just gives them a slightly more modern look. To achieve this look I used four light coats of Essie Jazz to begin with. If your familiar with their polishes then you know they all have a varying degree of pigmentation and thickness. This one in particular is very thin needs a few coats to make it opaque. I then added one coat of OPI Matte Top Coat to give it the perfect allure.
If you’re looking for a fresh and modern look, go for white nails. I know, it’s after Labor Day or whatever. Disregard those old-fashioned rules, have some fun. There are very few looks I like more than white nails and when you throw a matte coat over then, I swoon. This is the look I am wearing today to my first day of the semester. It just looks clean and I feel like you must have a certain amount of confidence to rock as my friends call them ‘White-Out nails.’
I used Essie Blanc to create this look. Now, white nails are tricky to apply properly. For some reason, white polish likes to streak so the application is a little bit different. I start by applying two coats of the white polish, then while they are still wet I add one coat of the matte. That matte ctop oat blends the white underneath to create a smooth color base. I then apply one more coat of white to really make them pop before one final matte top coat.
Finally, if you’re looking for an edgy and sexy look this is it. I thought about showing you a matte black look, but it’s kind of over done. I decided instead to show a deep red-violet. The shade it’s self is beautiful, but when you add the matte it darkens and becomes a super glamorous and edgy look. I only did two coats of Essie Bahama Mama to get this color payoff. If you do anymore than that, it will come out looking black. Because I wanted this nail to be edgy, I applied two coats of matte. It gave it a visually irresistible look that you just want to run your fingers over. It truly looks like velvet and will not only be perfect for fall, but it will also be a completely stylish holiday nail.
Until next month,
