SARAH SARNA FOR BEAUTYCOUNTER: A NEW PARTNERSHIP
You guys know I’m all about healthy living and implementing positive change. Over the years, – alongside posts on interiors, fashion, and beauty, – I’ve written about quitting caffeine and sugar, embracing sobriety, my practice of yoga, training for and completing countless half-marathons and several full marathons, raising funds for cancer research, and volunteerism for my local community, first in NYC and now in Northern Virginia. I have this thing with improvement, you could say, – which is why I’m thrilled to share my new partnership with Beautycounter, a safer skin care company that’s making a difference, because every bit counts.
Up until a few months ago, I thought I was pretty well informed when it comes to what’s healthy and what’s not. I read food and product labels, and predominantly selected organic or natural options across the board. So when I learned from a blogger friend that the FDA allows companies in the personal care industry to use known toxins (like lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates) – ingredients linked to cancer, learning disabilities, hormone disruption, and infertility – without telling us, I was really surprised. I started reading about cosmetics and skin care regulation (or, the lack thereof) and what I found out made me uncomfortable.
RIGHT THEN AND THERE
From years with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, I know that 1 in 2 American men and 1 in 3 American women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. When I uncovered more troubling facts, including the terrible impact that daily use of toxic products has on the body, it was a wake up call. For example: Only 10% of the 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products have safety data. Also, the last time the United States passed a federal law to regulate personal care product ingredients was in 1938. On top of this, in the last 20 years the European Union has banned or restricted over 1,300 ingredients, while the U.S. has only banned 11. I decided right then and there to switch to safer products, and thanks to my friend’s recommendation, I found Beautycounter.
DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT
Beautycounter has a list, called The Never List, of over 1,500 ingredients that they have banned and will never use in their products. I read the list and my friend sent me Beautycounter samples to try, specifically Beautycounter’s Face Collection: a cleanser, exfoliator, toner, day cream, eye cream, and night cream. As a skin care lover, I got the same fuzzy feels from opening and examining the products as I did when I unboxed previous high-end skin care purchases. Beautycounter products are beautiful and luxurious (I love the packaging), and as I discovered, they are incredibly high-performing, and better functioning than brands I had been loyal to for nearly two decades. And no toxins! When my time with the samples were up, I decided to purchase the Countertime Collection, based on the anti-aging ingredients it contains. You know what they say about an ounce of prevention. In the image above I’ve laid out 10 of my favorite Beautycounter products, including the items from the Countertime Collection, but more about that later.
I DIDN’T KNOW
After using the Countertime Collection, and the Lengthening Mascara, and the Color Sweep Blush, and the Touchup Skin Concealer Pen… for nearly two months, I knew I wanted to be a Beautycounter Consultant. I’m so excited that I’m now official! The company’s goal is to get safer products into the hands of everyone, and my personal goal is to raise as much awareness as possible that safer products exist. Just a few months ago, I didn’t know what I didn’t know, and I want to others to know more, too. Maya Angelou said this beautifully, “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.” Yes.
A BEAUTYCOUNTER CONSULTANT
As a Beautycounter Consultant, my role is to personalize your experience. Shop one-on-one with me, or at a social. Reach out to me to sample products, with questions, and for help with making the best decisions for your needs. Keep in mind that I can drop off (if you’re nearby, and then pick back up) or mail you samples to try for 2-3 days, after which time I kindly request they be mailed back to me. Please note that you will then be responsible for the return shipping costs (usually around $15-20 via USPS). My personal website also allows you to shop with my directly, and is an awesome educational resource. There is so much good information on there.
Now about 10 of my favorite Beautycounter products, above. I’ve numbered them in the sequence that I use them:
1 Nourishing Cleansing Balm – With Vitamin C to brighten skin and raspberry and cranberry seed oils to hydrate, this best-selling facial cleanser removes makeup and other impurities, without stripping away moisture.
2 Enlightening Treatment Pads – These toning pads supply skin with antioxidants while tightening and refining the appearance of pores.
3 Radiance Firming Complex – A rich and creamy, yet lightweight, serum that helps improve hydration, even skin tone, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
4 Uplifting Day Cream – A soothing cream that softens skin while increasing elasticity and hydration.
5 Stick Sunscreen – Compact and easy to use sheer protection from UVA/UVB rays that glides on smoothly without leaving white residue.
6 Rejuvenating Eye Cream – This winning formula reduces puffiness and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and dark circles.
7 Touchup Skin Concealer Pen – Hides redness and dark circles with long-lasting, flawless wear.
8 Color Sweep Blush Duo in Flamingo/Apricot – The perfect amount of healthy-looking, sheer, luminous color.
9 Lengthening Mascara – Conditions lashes and delivers dramatic definition and length.
10 Restorative Night Cream – While you sleep, this restorative cream intensifies the nightly cycle of natural skin repair, for skin that looks and feels firmer, smoother, and more hydrated in the morning.
