As a young girl growing up in the nineteen 80s, Saturday mornings equaled Style with Elsa Klenscha runway fashion and all-things-design show reported by CNN reporter Ms. Klensch.  It was via Klensch’s Australian accent that I was first introduced to CHANEL, the fashion house founded by Coco (Gabrielle) CHANEL in 1909.  Karl Lagerfeld has been CHANEL’s head designer since 1983.

The brand’s first fragrance, No. 5, was introduced by Coco in 1921.  Well received from the beginning, it remains one of the best-selling scents of all time.  Since then, many more fragrances have been introduced (for both men and women), including Coco Mademoiselle, created by Jacques Polge and debuted in 1991.

In 2007, Chanel began a new advertising campaign, starring current spokes model Keira Knightley as Coco Chanel.  Included in the campaign was a film  directed by acclaimed English director Joe Wright, who has also worked with Ms. Knightley in his award-winning films Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Atonement (2007).

And an interview with the actress regarding the film:

I have followed CHANEL and each of it’s instantly iconic efforts for over 25 years, and hold la maison in as high regard as I did at first sight as a child. I love the brand – everything CHANEL is always classic, chic, impeccably detailed, and in my mind: perfect.
