Tory Burch NYFW 2017 Hairstyle: ponytails with Black velvet Hair Bows.

HAIR BOWS

I have three hairstyles: wearing my hair down, wearing it in a bun, or wearing it in a ponytail.  So I’m doing a full-on happy dance to see that a low ponytail with a hair bow is trending this Fall.  How to?  Pull your hair in a low ponytail and use one of the hair bows I’ve rounded up here as a hair tie or barrette.  Done and done.

THE PHILADELPHIA STORY

Like many trends, the hair bow look is straight off the NYFW F/W 2017 runways, inspired by the classic romantic comedy, The Philadelphia Story,* (1940), starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and Jimmy Stewart.  For Tory Burch’s F/W 2017 presentation*, hair stylist Guido Palau, for Redken, explains,

“Katharine Hepburn’s movie “The Philadelphia Story” was the starting point, but the inspiration was really the classicism, feminism and beauty that Tory always brings to her women. So even though there’s a reference to a 1940 movie, the look isn’t Forties — it’s timeless.”

THE LOOK

I like that the low pony is a hairstyle that works beautifully for shorter and longer hair. Here a long bob is pulled back into a messier low ponytail, tied with a perfectly undone black satin ribbon bow. I am very much in the messy hair camp, as I always style my hair to look un-perfect: slightly off-center, with sections not sitting quite flat in a ponytail, etc. This image is from tumblr, which is why I haven’t linked back.

This velvet ribbon* can go right from the office to a night out, worn here with a simple black turtleneck and denim.

Another tumblr image, clearly from backstage pre- runway presentation. This is a bigger and bolder black bow, with perhaps the messiest ponytail I’ve seen… in public.  Very romantic, and I’d absolutely wear it, although I haven’t taken my ponytails this far – yet.

This black velvet ribbon is attached to a barrette rather than a hair tie, if you prefer to clip it in place rather than use a bow and hair tie in-one.

Such a gorgeous hair-bow example, again from the runway, and likely the same model as in the first image, previously wearing a plaid sweater.

HAIR BOWS IN COLOR

If you’re not a wear-black-woman (I love to wear black), and a black velvet isn’t your thing, try a low ponytail with a bow in color.  A few favorites:

This hair bow reminds me of a Vermeer painting.

This hair bow in blue cotton chambray* is a little preppier, especially against lighter hair colors like blonde.

I like the juxtaposition of a soft, pastel, baby blue ribbon, adorned with edgy rock-and-roll silver studs.
