I spent Saturday afternoon reading David Hicks scrapbooks*, a new September-release art book gifted to me by Vendome Press. Edited and photographed by David Hick’s son, interior designer Ashley Hicks (brother of India Hicks), the 336-page book is a son’s edit of decades of his father’s life and design work, amassed in 24 volumes of scrapbooks. The magic of this publication’s presentation is in the natural sunlight that Ashley Hicks used to photograph his dad’s scrapbooks on his kitchen floor. Ashley’s hyper-real photography creates an unbelievable sense of intimacy between reader and text, that truthfully leaves me dizzy with awe at the full legacy of a true design icon. Reading it, I feel as though I am reading David Hicks’ actual scrapbooks, rather than a compilation; this is a very special book.
