Red is a color of extremes. It is associated with love and war, desire and danger, and with adventure and power. Red’s emotionally intensity raises blood pressure, increases respiration rate, and speeds metabolism. I couldn’t help but be intrigued, then, when I saw the glossy walls of this Manhattan apartment, designed by Philip Gorrivan. If only these lacquered custom candy apple red (from Fine Paints of Europe) walls could talk.

A collection of black and white fashion photography by Lillian Bassman is hung as a gallery wall rather than a grid “to make it less serious and more fun and young,” Gorrivan says.
