Hi, it’s Alicia from The Dumbbelle, back with my monthly beauty column on In July I wrote about one of my skincare obsessions, and today I’m sharing one of my favorite summery looks for hair: a messy braid.

Braid hairstyles are known to be super feminine and romantic. Messy braids are even more fab, especially when trying to fight the summer’s heat! A messy side braid, made famous by the likes of Blake Lively and Selena Gomez, can be made from any kind of braid: french, fishtail, 5-strand, etc.

This is a look easily achieved with a bit of texture and lots of teasing. It’s also very easy to pull off for running errands, lazy days at the beach or with a cocktail dress!

1. Braids, like curls, hold the best when starting with dirty hair. For clean hair, you’ll want to add some grit. Use a texture product like: Bumble and Bumble Texture Hair (Un) Dressing Creme or a dry shampoo spray: Batiste Dry Shampoo.

2. For a messy side-swept braid, start braiding from the back to the side, where you want your braid to fall. Once you get to the side where you want it to fall, tie your hair into a ponytail with a hair elastic. Use a teasing brush to tease the ponytail, then braid the teased hair.

3. When you’re finished braiding, secure the end with another elastic. Then, tug a little at different parts of the braid so it looks uneven and loose. Once you’re satisfied with the look, cut the first hair elastic from where you made the ponytail.
